Each garden area required special soil preparation, removing buried boulders, building stone retaining walls, protecting the brook edge from storm waters, bridges to cross the brook at various points, gravel mulching in the Rock Garden and annual mulching elsewhere, edging annually at lawn areas, pruning and replacing as well as adding shrubs, small trees, conifers, bulbs and perennials over a twenty year period. Finding the right plant for the right place and vice versa was both the ongoing challenge and pleasure.
