Country Gardens
Large Country Garden
This house and barn, by Architect Cyril Beveridge, sits on a hillside on a former farm field, edged by woodland. Working in collaboration with the architect, the slope was divided into four levels: swimming pool and play lawn, guest parking and barn drive-through, living and service level and upper lawn with play structure.
Connecting these levels with steps, terraces and walkways on all sides of the house allows access to all outdoor areas without ever going inside. Comfortable stone steps lead from parking to the front door and to a large porch that wraps three sides of the living room. It provides access to the rear stone terrace and upper lawn, as well as screened service areas, the kitchen door, a small herb garden, and to steps connecting to the lowest level, the swimming pool area.
The view from the living room and porch is of a large lawn panel edged by borders of perennials, shrubs and bulbs backed by a yew hedge, providing year round interest. Large old trees behind the hedge provide a timeless background.
