Country Gardens
Garden for an old Farmstead-Cont.
The driveway, edged with a rail fence and Linden trees, leads past the walled garden to the kitchen entrance and vegetable garden. A small patio off the kitchen is a favorite spot for morning coffee and views to the vegetable garden, the entrance drive and fields beyond. (photos row 2)
The new front terrace provides both sun and shade and is used for entertaining. (photos row 3 and 4 left, vegetable garden at right)
Benches and chairs placed throughout the gardens create a variety of places to enjoy the surrounding landscape. Original Adirondack chairs have since been replaced by the owner with Wave Hill chairs.
Trees and shrubs along the driveway give structure and tie the whole into the larger rural landscape of woods and fields. (photos bottom row of early garden views to surrounding landscape).
This garden is listed in the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens with photos by Molly Adams. The vegetable garden fence was published in Northeast Gardening by Elvin McDonald, Macmillan Publishing Company, New York, 1990. The gardens have been opened for many Garden Conservancy Open Days.
