Country Gardens
Garden for a Converted Barn cont.
A large stone terrace at the rear of the main house connects to the garage, swimming pool and pasture below. A stone wall at the edge, together with wood panels and arches on both sides, creates an intimate dining and seating area. Rustic stone steps lead down the bank to the pasture and pond (photos row 2). The bank, planted with a combination of shrubs, conifers, hostas and grasses, provides year-round green to frame the view.
The swimming pool, with whirlpool at the top, was tucked into the hillside to be invisible from both the mainhouse and guesthouse interiors. Gentle steps, dense screen planting and a large sunning area add to its appeal. Several additional retaining walls and steps connect the pool directly to the guesthouse level. Raised beds with seasonal planting add interest along the way (photos row 4).
Screened with dense planting above the retaining wall to the pool below, the stone patio at the guesthouse is totally private. A narrow path with plantings on both sides and comfortable steps lead to the front (photo row 4 right and bottom row.)
