House & Garden in a Clearing
Landscape design in collaboration with the architect for this new residence in the Arts and Crafts style shows the close relationship between house, garden and the surrounding landscape. The property is entered through a woodland drive, dark and mysterious, then opens to a large sunny clearing, enveloped on all sides by woods.
The large gravel forecourt is bounded on one side by a stone wall connecting the house to the storage barn. A hedge of hornbeams behind the wall, viburnums and conifers on the opposite garage walls, block views to both the rear private gardens and garage entrances and tie the house back to the woods.
The private gardens can be entered on both sides from the forecourt. A large level game lawn from the gate at the barn leads to a dining terrace and porch with patio, all surrounded by seasonal perennial and shrub plantings. An old flowering cherry, 'Hally Jolivette', brought from a previous property, gives an illusion of age to the space.
