House & Garden in a Clearing-con't
A low stone wall retains the changes in grade between the game lawn and terrace. A sizeable mixed border on the lawn side is repeated on a smaller scale at the terrace level. Supplemented with annuals and bulbs, the border has color all through the out-of-doors season. (photos top row and details row 5)
At the kitchen end, the terrace connects with a brick walk to a shady porch house extension and a small patio and deck at the kitchen door (photos top 3 rows). Stone seat walls, boxwood and shrub hedging around planting beds define the porch, patio, and deck. The walk continues to the service area and to the garage court (photo left row 4).
Views from the terrace and porch to the woodland edges - planted with rhododendrons, Mountain Laurel, and flowering native dogwoods - extend to the larger landscape beyond. Hornbeams and large viburnums from the garage to the woodland edge provide privacy to the gardens and play area. Deer fencing set back into the woods snakes through the trees to be nearly invisible.
